Upper School covers grades 7 through 10 and includes both the Logic and Rhetoric stages of learning.

Students enter the Logic stage as old children and leave as young adults. It is a critical age in a student’s development, and our teachers and staff come alongside them to help shepherd and influence them as they grow physically, emotionally, and spiritually. A unique quality of the education provided to this age of student in comparison to other schools in the area is that we have a strong focus on teaching students to think critically and logically. This involves teaching formal logic, where students are taught to formulate coherent and sound arguments and recognize errors in arguments, both their own and others. These skills can then be brought to bear on all of the other subjects that they will come in contact with during the rest of their education. Students in this stage of school will also be capping off their studies in Latin and should be able to now read and speak in this ancient language, opening up a vast array of source texts in Western literature, history, and science. These challenging academic years will teach students how to become self-learners, manage their schedules, and think critically and logically.

When students move into the Rhetoric stage, it is time to finish our task of forming a graduate that has Godly Character as well as Wisdom and Eloquence. We realize that education and sanctification are lifelong endeavors and that every graduate has unique gifts, but our goal as an institution is to work alongside our students’ parents in fostering these qualities in our students. The quality of Godly Character has been developed diligently since the first day of Kindergarten, and this work will continue in the Rhetoric stage, but the focus turns now on developing students with Wisdom and Eloquence. Our Rhetoric stage is unique from other area high schools in that our students are taught formal Rhetoric where the student learns to express himself with “fluency, grace, elegance, and persuasiveness.” (Bauer, The Well-Trained Mind) Our students are taught to take the facts they have been learning since the grammar stage, organize these facts into logical statements and arguments, and then express these thoughts in a winsome way. But merely expressing thoughts and arguments well does not make for a wise and eloquent student. These skills must be guided by the Spirit of God to express the truth of a given subject. So what does this look like at RCA from a practical perspective? Across subjects students will have much of their learning revolve around in-class guided discussions where they will discuss and debate the great themes of human history and literature, always measuring these themes against the plumb line of Scripture. Participating in this “Great Conversation” with wisdom and eloquence is how our students are uniquely prepared to go out into the world and represent Christ and His kingdom in all endeavors.

Christian Studies

  • The Life of Christ and the Birth of the Early Church: Grade Level 7


    In this course, students begin a survey of New Testament history, using the Rod and Staff Biblical Studies to explore the events of Jesus' earthly ministry and the early development of the New Testament church. The curriculum covers the key moments of Jesus' birth, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension, with a focus on comparing the four Gospel accounts to gain a deeper understanding of the overall narrative. Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament are examined in light of Jesus' life and teachings, bringing new meaning to God’s plan of salvation. Additionally, students will learn about the origins of the church and how God worked through His people to spread the Gospel "into all the world." Through scripture study, discussion, and reflection, students will deepen their faith and develop a greater understanding of God's Word.


    Life in Christ: New Testament from Romans to Revelation: Grade Level 8


    In this course, students delve into the New Testament, focusing on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and the early church's formation. Utilizing the Rod and Staff Biblical Studies, the Bible serves as the primary textbook, guiding students through 30 lessons that explore Jesus' birth, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension. The workbook encourages active engagement with scripture through various question types, including multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank, along with timeline studies and vocabulary exercises to deepen understanding. By examining Messianic prophecies and their fulfillment, students gain insight into God's plan for salvation and the spread of the Gospel worldwide.


    Part I: God's Plan for His People: Grade Level 9


    In this course, students will explore the unfolding revelation of God’s nature and work throughout history in the Rod and Staff Biblical Studies. Beginning with God's revelation before the Law and continuing through the Law, the life of His Son, the apostles, and the church, this study emphasizes the distinction between knowing about God and truly knowing God. By examining key Scripture passages, students will gain a deeper understanding of God’s character, His plan for humanity, and His ongoing work in the world. This course aims to inspire a personal relationship with God, rooted in Scripture and knowledge of His ways.


    Part II: God's Plan for His People – Redemption and Response: Grade Level 10


    In this course, utilizing the Rod and Staff Biblical Studies, students will complete the study of God’s plan for His people by exploring the creation and fall of man, the impact of sin, and humanity’s need for a Savior. The course delves into God’s redemptive plan through Jesus Christ and examines the future of mankind as individuals respond to God’s call. Through Scripture, students will understand the profound significance of God’s redemption and how it shapes both their present lives and their eternal future.

Foreign Language

  • Latin – Upper School Level: Grade Level 7-10


    At Rogue Christian Academy, we offer a robust and classical Latin program based on the highly regarded Memoria Press Latin Curriculum. This course is designed to build a strong foundation in Latin grammar, vocabulary, and translation, fostering not only linguistic proficiency but also a deep understanding of the influence of Latin on the English language and Western civilization.

    Students will begin by mastering the basics of Latin, including noun declensions, verb conjugations, and sentence structure, with a focus on building fluency in reading and translating Latin texts.   • Logic I: Introduction to Formal Logic: Grade Level 8

Writing

  • RCA students are taught according to Progymnastata, which is a set of rudimentary exercises intended to prepare students of rhetoric for the creation and performance of complete practice oration. Many Progymnastata exercises correlate directly with the parts of a classical oration, and they are a crucial component of classical and Renaissance pedagogy.


    Mastering Thought and Expression: Grade Level 7


    This course equips students with the foundational tools of clear thinking, persuasive writing, and precise grammar through the classical tradition of language study. Using the Progymnasmata exercises of Refutation and Confirmation, students will learn to analyze arguments, evaluate opposing viewpoints, and construct logical, well-supported essays. These exercises train students to think critically and communicate effectively, preparing them for advanced rhetoric and composition.


    Alongside these writing studies, students will reinforce their mastery of English grammar through Memoria Press’s English Grammar Recitation Five. This structured approach ensures a deep understanding of grammatical rules, sentence structure, and language mechanics, enabling students to write and speak with clarity and confidence.


    Through rigorous practice in both composition and grammar, students will develop the skills necessary to articulate truth with precision, wisdom, and eloquence.


    Developing Persuasive Argumentation: Grade Level 8


    This course builds upon the classical tradition of writing and reasoning by training students in the Common Topic stage of the Progymnasmata. Students will learn to construct compelling arguments by examining a subject from multiple perspectives, identifying causes and effects, making comparisons, and appealing to authority. This method strengthens logical thinking and prepares students for advanced rhetorical writing.


    In addition to composition, students will refine their grammar, syntax, and style through structured exercises that reinforce clarity and precision in writing. Through analysis, discussion, and practice, students will develop the ability to articulate their thoughts persuasively, equipping them to defend truth with wisdom and eloquence.

    The Art of Praise, Critique, and Comparison: Grade Level 9


    This course continues the classical tradition of composition by guiding students through the Encomium, Invective, and Comparison stages of the Progymnasmata. Students will refine their rhetorical skills by learning to craft essays that praise virtue (encomium), critique vice (invective), and compare and contrast ideas, figures, or events (comparison). These exercises develop discernment, persuasive writing, and eloquence—essential tools for effective communication.


    Through structured writing practice, grammatical reinforcement, and thoughtful analysis, students will deepen their understanding of language and rhetoric. This course equips them to articulate truth with clarity and conviction, preparing them for advanced studies in logic, rhetoric, and composition.


    Crafting Vivid and Persuasive Characterization: Grade Level 10


    In this course, students will engage in the Characterization stage of the Progymnasmata, a classical exercise in crafting compelling descriptions of historical and literary figures. Through the study of virtues, vices, and moral character, students will learn to analyze and portray individuals with depth, clarity, and persuasive detail. This training strengthens their ability to think critically about human nature while honing their composition skills.


    Alongside these exercises, students will reinforce their mastery of grammar and style to ensure precision and eloquence in their writing. By developing the ability to describe and evaluate character with wisdom and discernment, students will be well-prepared for advanced rhetorical studies and the lifelong pursuit of truth and virtue.
